How to Care for Your Atlanticbike Shed: A Maintenance Guide for London Front Gardens
Your Atlanticbike shed is built to last — a secure, elegant addition to your front garden that protects your bikes, bins and belongings all year round. Whether you’ve chosen a stained timber finish, a hardwood cladding, or a sedum green roof, a little occasional care will go a long way in keeping it looking beautiful and performing as it should.
Here’s everything you need to know to look after your shed and get the most out of your investment.
1. Caring for Your Sedum Green Roof
If your Atlanticbike shed is fitted with a sedum green roof, you’ll be pleased to know it’s incredibly low-maintenance. Sedum is a drought-tolerant succulent that thrives in full sun and harsh conditions — ideal for London’s changing weather. That said, there are a few simple things you can do to help it flourish.
Watering
- In warmer months, water the roof once a week.
- During a heatwave, increase this to every 2–3 days, ideally in the evening.
- If the sedum turns red, there’s no need for concern — this is a natural response to heat stress and will return to green as temperatures cool.
Seasonal Care
- We recommend a light weeding in spring and autumn to remove any unwanted growth.
- Clear away fallen leaves and check that drainage outlets remain unblocked.
Optional Fertiliser
- Once a year, usually in early spring, you may apply a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertiliser to encourage healthy new growth.
Ongoing Monitoring
- Keep an eye out for bare patches, especially after windy or stormy weather. These can be replanted with sedum cuttings or trays.
- Ensure gutters and downpipes are clear, particularly during autumn.
If you’ve chosen a wildflower or grass-based green roof instead, we’ll provide a dedicated care guide at the time of installation.
2. Timber Cladding Maintenance
All of our sheds are constructed with high-quality timber cladding, carefully selected to suit your setting. Whether your shed uses stained pressure-treated timber or hardwood cladding like Meranti or Red Cedar, your approach to care will vary slightly.
A. Stained Tanalised Pressure Treated Timber
This type of timber is treated to withstand moisture and decay and is further protected by a UV-resistant stain.
Twice a Year
- Clean with a soft damp cloth and a clear outdoor timber cleaner.
- Avoid high-pressure hoses and abrasive tools that could damage the surface.
Every 3–5 Years
- Re-stain the timber to maintain its colour and protective properties.
- Lightly sand any worn or flaking areas before applying a fresh coat.
- Use a high-quality, outdoor wood stain with UV protection, ideally the one originally used.
Optional
- For added protection and a slightly richer finish, you may apply a clear satin exterior wood oil.
Things to Watch For
- Cracks, mould or algae growth are normal signs of ageing. These can be addressed with a timber-safe cleaner and refinished as needed.

B. Hardwood Cladding (Meranti or Red Cedar)
These premium hardwoods are chosen for their durability and distinctive appearance. Left untreated, they will naturally weather to a silvery-grey over time.
Routine Cleaning
- Wipe the cladding twice a year using a soft cloth and a gentle timber cleaner.
- Choose a warm, dry day so the wood dries quickly after cleaning.
Preserving the Original Colour (Optional)
- If you wish to retain the rich tones of Meranti or Red Cedar, apply a suitable exterior wood stain.
- Always test on a spare piece or a concealed section first.
- Reapply as needed, depending on sun exposure.
Natural Silvering
- Many homeowners embrace the silvered finish. It’s purely aesthetic and does not affect the performance of the timber.

3. Caring for the Metal Frame
Each Atlanticbike shed is built with a powder-coated steel frame, offering excellent weather resistance with minimal upkeep.
General Cleaning
- Use a damp cloth or a gentle rinse with a low-pressure hose to remove dust and dirt.
- Please avoid strong detergents or abrasive cloths.
Optional Maintenance (Every 2–3 Years)
- Apply a coat of clear car wax for added protection and a subtle shine.
Touch-Up Paint
- For small scratches or chips, we can supply RAL-matched touch-up paint to restore the surface and prevent rust.
4. Why Maintenance Matters
Looking after your Atlanticbike shed isn’t just about keeping it looking smart — it’s a simple way to protect what you’ve invested in.
A well-maintained shed will:
- Increase your property value by improving usability and kerb appeal
- Keep your bikes safe and hidden from sight, deterring theft
- Tuck away bins and clutter, creating a clean, tidy frontage
- Contribute to a peaceful, natural front garden with a living green roof and attractive finishes
- Elevate the look of your home from the street, adding charm and character
- Give you peace of mind — knowing your items are protected and your shed is built to last
- Deliver a strong return on investment through years of reliable, worry-free use
Even just a few minutes of care each season can make all the difference in how your shed performs and ages.
