A Smarter Approach to Home Bike Storage for London Driveways
Reclaiming Space: The New Challenge of Front Gardens in the City
In many parts of London, front gardens have quietly disappeared. With parking at a premium, homeowners often convert the entire space into a driveway — practical, yes, but at the expense of greenery, storage, and character.
If you cycle regularly, or your household owns multiple bikes, that shift creates a real problem. Where do you safely store your bikes and gear when there’s no side access, no back garden, and no room to build?
It’s a growing issue for homeowners who care about their property, want to stay active, and don’t want to leave valuable equipment unsecured. And it’s exactly where thoughtful, space-efficient home bike storage comes into play.
One of our recent clients faced this challenge head-on — and found a solution that gave them more than they expected.

No Room for Bikes, Nowhere to Plant
Our client’s front garden had been completely paved over to create a driveway for their electric car. Like many London homes, there was no rear access, and no external garage or side return to fall back on.
At the same time, the driveway had a steep slope, which ruled out the usual off-the-shelf shed options. Nothing available online could sit level or provide real security.
On top of that, this homeowner was an experienced triathlete. They needed to store multiple bikes and gear, not just a single commuter bike. And they weren’t just thinking about function — they cared deeply about restoring some greenery to their home.
Their ideal solution had to offer secure bike storage, fit the tight dimensions of a sloped driveway, retain access for their car, and reintroduce some planting space.

Secure Bike Storage with a Deep Green Roof
We approached the problem with a custom design tailored to the property’s slope and constraints.
The project began with an essential — but often overlooked — stage: proper groundwork. Before we could even think about installing the unit, we had to completely clear out the existing space, which was overrun with stubborn weeds and deeply rooted shrubs.
Once cleared, we carried out a bespoke concrete pour, carefully designed to match the gradient of the sloped driveway. We also colour-matched the finish to blend with the existing paving, ensuring the new base looked like a natural extension of the original surface — not an afterthought.
We then installed the custom-built bike storage unit — a robust steel enclosure clad in hardwood timber — perfectly aligned against the side boundary. This precise positioning preserved full access to the parking space while unlocking valuable storage and planting potential.

The result was a secure, discreet, single-compartment home bike storage solution with a minimal footprint and maximum impact.
Inside, the unit was fitted with removable shelving and hooks to neatly organise triathlon gear, accessories, and everyday cycling essentials.
But the real feature was the top: a deep green roof with 200mm of soil, designed to support a wide range of planting — from pollinator-friendly herbs and vegetables to small trees and flowering shrubs.
This green roof was a real garden space, positioned at eye level for enjoyment from the pavement and indoors. The planted roof reintroduced over 3 square metres of greenery to the front of the property.
We took care of everything: from removing the overgrown bushes and roots, to design, fabrication, delivery, and installation. The homeowner didn’t need to coordinate multiple trades — it was a smooth, single-point process from start to finish.

A Front Garden Restored
The end result was a complete rethink of what home bike storage can be:
- Secure space for bikes and gear
- No loss of parking space or vehicle access
- A beautiful, contemporary enclosure that improved kerb appeal
- Over 3m² of usable planting surface — a front yard that felt like a garden again
- Increased property value and long-term practicality
It also gave the homeowner something they hadn’t had before: peace of mind while travelling, knowing their gear was protected. Equally, the pleasure of returning home to a front garden that didn’t just look better but worked harder for their owners.

What Makes Great Home Bike Storage?
For many homeowners in the city, especially in places like London where space is limited, the best home bike storage isn't just about hiding bikes out of sight.
A well-designed solution should:
- Fit tight or sloped driveways without compromise
- Keep bikes secure, dry, and easily accessible
- Complement the home’s design, not detract from it
- Add functional planting space or visual greenery
- Increase the value and utility of the property over time
That’s the standard we build to: secure storage, thoughtful design, and high-quality materials — always tailored to each site.
