Bespoke L-shaped Cycle and Refuse Store
PROBLEM
Beard Construction approached AtlanticBike to resolve a complex bike and bin storage requirement for their high-profile Gap House project, designed by BDP.The brief called for a compact, L-shaped layout integrating:
- A single-compartment cycle store for up to four bikes
- A triple bin enclosure to accommodate a large wheelie bin and mixed waste
- A continuous low-maintenance green roof to visually tie into the surrounding landscaping
- A powder-coated metal structure in a finish that matched the wider development
Above all, the solution needed to balance robust security with refined aesthetics, suitable for a landmark scheme.
SOLUTION
We delivered a fully bespoke L-shaped bike and bin store, incorporating:
- Three side-by-side waste compartments with ventilated steel panels and removable shelving
- A single compartment cycle storage configured for four bikes in an end-on arrangement
- A flat continuous green roof planted with low-maintenance sedum planting, with two concealed discharge points draining into the site’s main gully
- An integrated Phantom lock system for high-spec cycle security and magnetic latching for discreet, easy bin access
- A red oxide powder-coated metal enclosure — durable, understated, and visually coherent with the development
APPROACH
- Tailored Design: Engineered a compact L-shaped footprint to maximise storage within the constraints of the front garden boundary.
- Material Integrity: Constructed from long-life steel, finished to architectural standards for durability and resilience in exposed environments.
- Roof & Drainage: Developed a shallow green roof with integrated drainage and concealed discharge points for low-maintenance runoff.
- Security & Access: Integrated our Phantom lock system for discreet, high-spec security; access designed through four one-sided entry points, optimised for site logistics.
- Material Integrity: Constructed from long-life steel, finished to architectural standards for durability and resilience in exposed environments. This design was developed without timber cladding — a deliberate choice to suit the architectural context and reduce maintenance, while acknowledging that others may prefer this streamlined aesthetic.
- Value Engineering & Scale: Refined the design and materials to meet budget requirements. Delivered multiple units with the capacity to scale production tenfold as needed.
