Where Education Meets Sustainability: Building for the Next Generation

Supporting Environmental Trusts

Environmental charities like river trusts and wildlife trusts in the UK drive substantial impact through education and raising awareness among the younger generation. These efforts create a ripple effect, fostering long-term change by instilling environmental values early in life.

Funds invested in schools and youth-focused initiatives have a compounded effect, supporting not just the immediate objectives of the charity but also building a foundation for future generations who are more attuned to environmental issues.

Atlanticbike’s green roof bike shelters and structures are an effective way to amplify this impact, offering meaningful benefits that align with your charity’s mission in three key ways:

  • Promoting cycling and active lifestyles
  • A living demonstration of environmental values
  • Opportunities for engagement and awareness

We've supplied and installed our green roof shelters as part of SRT's River Schools project in the Black Country

    Caslon Primary School

The Caslon Primary School needed two key installations to support its students and community: a covered outdoor relaxation area for the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) section of the school and a pushchair and buggy shelter near the nursery to provide parents and carers with a secure, weatherproof parking solution.

Our first conversation with the community engagement officer was followed by a documented two-step feedback process which was also used to get funding approval. Our tailored approach and experienced design team created two bespoke solutions tailored on the trust’s values and school’s practical needs.

The pushchair and buggy shelter has given parents a safe and convenient storage solution, encouraging sustainable transport to and from school.

The reading nook for the SEND section is a beautifully crafted outdoor space that provides children with a calming, inclusive environment to unwind.

The broader grant-funded project aimed to improve the three elements of community wellbeing – people, places and environment. The need for education and physical infrastructure programmes was highlighted to help local young people from urban areas in the Black Country discover their rivers and take action to protect them.
The trust’s community engagement officer contacted us to help create a bespoke cycle storage with green features that promote a healthy lifestyle and demonstrate sustainability values in action.

The result is a pair of state-of-the-art cycle storage facilities that stand as a living, breathing example of sustainable infrastructure. By incorporating planters, a green roof, and a living wall, the shelters not only serve their functional purpose but also contribute to student education about biodiversity, water management, and environmental stewardship. Each cycle shelter was customized to match the school’s aesthetic and functional needs.

    Ongoing partnership

The success of these projects has led to an ongoing partnership between Atlanticbike and Severn Rivers Trust. We are collaborating on a new initiative to design a green roof scooter shelter that doubles as a SuDS (Sustainable Drainage Systems) demonstrator. This approach aims to reduce costs using a standardized design that can be deployed across multiple schools, making funds go further and achieving greater impact.
